What is Peridot?

Peridot is a gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, composed primarily of magnesium iron silicate with the chemical formula (Mg, Fe)₂SiO₄. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color range shades of green, from yellow-green to olive and pure vibrant green. The color intensity depends on the iron content within the crystal structure.

Formation and Sources

Peridot forms deep within the Earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface through volcanic activity, especially in basalt. It is also found in meteoritic material, one of the few gemstones that originate both on Earth and in space. Significant sources of high-quality peridot include the United States (Arizona), Pakistan (Kashmir region), Egypt (Zabargad Island), and Myanmar.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Known to ancient Egyptians as the “gem of the sun,” peridot was mined as early as 1500 BC on Zabargad Island. It was treasured for its vibrant glow and reputed to protect against evil spirits and night terrors. Much of Cleopatra’s famous green jewelry is believed to have been peridot, not emerald. Peridot remains the birthstone for August and symbolizes love, protection, and positive energy in many cultures.
